World Stroke Congress 2024 in Abu Dhabi

The 16th World Stroke Congress (WSC 2024) took place from October 23-26, 2024, in Abu Dhabi, UAE, gathering the international stroke community to advance the goal of reducing the burden of stroke worldwide through better prevention, treatment, and recovery. 2800 participants from over 110 countries and more than 220 expert speakers from across disciplines discussed the latest science, clinical trials, breakthroughs, and stroke care guidelines. Participants had the opportunity to connect within a global network dedicated to delivering high-quality stroke care, skill-building, and high-quality research.

The Nepal Stroke Project was also well represented. Dr. Bikram Prasad Gajurel from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, Dr. Ashim Subedi from Manipal Teaching Hospital in Pokhara, Dr. Pradesh Ghimire from National City Hospital in Chitwan, Dr. Balgopal Karmacharya from Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Pokhara, Dr. Ram Chandra Subedi from Grande International Hospital in Kathmandu and Dr. Khechar Paudel from Province Hospital in Surkhet traveled to Abu Dhabi to participate in the exchange of current research knowledge and present their latest findings through posters and oral presentations. From our international team, Dr. Christine Tunkl, Dr. Christoph Gumbinger, Shirsho Shreyan and Alexandra Krauss joined the conference, in person and virtually, contributing additional presentations.

In addition to showcasing its achievements through presentations and posters, the Nepal Stroke Project celebrated Dr. Khechar Paudel from Surkhet, who was invited to join the new cohort of the WSO’s “Future Leaders Program.” This two-year initiative aims to develop the technical and research skills of emerging stroke professionals. Congratulations, Dr. Khechar, on becoming a Future Leader!

The conference offered great opportunities to enhance our insight in current research, exchange experiences with other stroke care initiatives and to get together for constructive meetings on our next project steps. These steps include strengthening inter-hospital cooperation on stroke cases, organizing regular steering group meetings to discuss successes and challenges, and establishing a more structured and enhanced training initiative in the future.

This year’s congress was filled with innovative science, in-depth discussions, and valuable new insights, from the latest breakthroughs in stroke treatment to new prevention strategies and rehabilitation techniques. Be sure to check out our team’s contributions on the WSC 2024 posters!
