On January 28, 2025, the Nepal Stroke Association (NSA) successfully conducted the fifth session of its Stroke Awareness Program (SAP) in Rupandehi-1, Lumbini, Nepal. Sponsored by the Nepal Stroke Project, this initiative aimed to educate the local community about stroke prevention, early detection, and emergency response.

troke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Many strokes are preventable with the right knowledge and lifestyle changes. The SAP focused on four key objectives:

  • Increasing awareness of stroke symptoms and risk factors.
  • Encouraging prevention through healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Improving emergency response by educating the public on immediate actions.
  • Providing health screenings for conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.

The program saw a strong turnout of 103 participants, mainly middle-aged and elderly individuals from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The agenda included:

  • Educational talks by Dr. Mahesh Raj Ghimire on stroke causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment.
  • Interactive Q&A sessions with medical experts.
  • Health screenings to assess stroke risk factors.

The event was well-organized, thanks to dedicated volunteers, medical professionals, and community representatives. Dr. Lekhjung Thapa’s leadership played a vital role in ensuring the program’s success.

The Nepal Stroke Association emphasized the need for:

  • Regular workshops to maintain public awareness.
  • Improved educational materials for better understanding.
  • Stronger community partnerships to expand outreach.
  • Follow-up services for high-risk individuals identified during screenings.

The Stroke Awareness Program in Nepal is a step toward reducing the burden of stroke by empowering communities with knowledge. Continued efforts and collaborations will ensure that more people recognize the warning signs, take preventive measures, and respond effectively in emergencies.
